Fraction and division in arrays

In class we have learnt about fractions in division. We used counters to solve the division problem. This is my array.

The fraction that I wanted to find first was 1/2 of 60. So what I did was divide 60 by 2 which is 30. Next I had to find out what was 1/15 of 60. So once again I divided 60 by 4 which is 15. Finally I had to find out what 1/15 of 60 was. So finally I divided 60 by 15 which equaled 4.

Do you know any other strategies to solve these problems?

Have you ever tried this technique?

Literature circles

We have been doing literature circles. Literature circles are when you pick a book to read, then respond to the text in some way.

Some ways to respond to your text are drawing pictures, making mental pictures, make inferences, making predictions, agree or disagree with the charecters decisions, connect ythe story to your own life, asking questions, changing the story like – what if and many more ways.

The book that I am reading currently is The Witches. with the recent chapter I have read I have responded to the text by asking questions, summarising, putting myself into the charectars  shoes, making inferences and changing the story. I changed the story by asking what would’ve happened if the boy was with a friend or his grandma in the treehouse when the witch came.

Have you ever done literature circles before?
What are some ways you have responded to your text?

Holiday recount

In our class we have been asked to write a recount about our holiday.

On my holidays I went to the jump factory.

Here is my recount.

‘Spring!’ Was the sound I heard on Friday afternoon as I entered the jump factory in Rowville. I arrived at jump with my brothers Nathan,Nav and Nick to have a fun weekend.

We arrived at jump in the afternoon before we had lunch. Once we arrived we went upstairs and collected our socks and wristbands to wear. The socks I had were black and had green spots on the bottom. My wristband was pink and had the words ‘jump factory’ on it. We had to wear socks so we don’t slip and also because the socks are cleaner for the trampolines. We also rented a locker to keep all of our shoes in so we wouldn’t lose them.

We got our socks and wristbands and put our shoes in the locker. After we went back downstairs to the jump section for the fun to begin.

When we went back downstairs we had an hour to what ever we wanted. First we played dodgeball. In dodgeball you have a lot of trampolines around you and then you have the balls that you throw at people. This was really fun. Next, we played basketball for a little while and then moved onto the pit.

After all of that the last place we went to was the trampolines. On the trampolines I jumped as high as a kangaroo. I had the most fun on the trampolines because you can do whatever you want on them.

At the blink of an eye the hour was up, we collected our shoes and our socks from our locker we put our shoes back on.

Once we left jump we had KFC for lunch. I had popcorn chicken and it tasted really good. After lunch we went back home.

At jump I had a great time. It was really fun and exiting. It was the highlight of my holidays and we all had a great time.

My trip at jump was a day I won’t forget and I had the best time. I learnt that I’m not the best at doing flips and tricks on the trampolines.
